Theatre at King's

King's is a major destination for theatre aficionados.

The College, through our partnership with Dalhousie University, not only offers degrees in everything from Acting to Technical Scenography in a dynamic Theatre Department, but is also home to the King's Theatrical Society, a larger-than–life student society that brings out the creative genius of up to a third of the student body each year.

The King's Theatrical Society is the most active university theatre society in North America, with more of the student body actively engaged in acting, producing, directing, writing or set design than at any other institution. Last year, the KTS staged nine productions, including the annual musical and a three-day Fringe Festival featuring student written plays. White KTS has The Pit, a black box style venue, and the KTS Lecture Hall available, play locations frequently include various areas of the King's Quad. The steps of the Library are home to the annual production of the Classics in the Quad, an outdoor performance of a Greek comedy or tragedy. The KTS will frequently include plays being studied in the Foundation Year Programme. In recent years, these have included Phaedra, Copenhagen, Hamlet, the Bacchae and many, many others. Imagine the perspective you can bring to a text while simultaneously engaged in developing a character or producing costumes accurate to the period.

You can also pursue a full practical or academic degree in theatre through our affiliation with Dalhousie University. Here, you can choose one of five specializations available within the Department of Theatre: Acting, Costume Studies, Music and Theatre, Scenography and Technical Scenography, and Theatre Studies. You may take part in an annual season of four stage productions of varying periods and content where students collaborate among the disciplines; acting students perform on stage and workshop new productions with nationally and internationally known theatre personalities, while scenography, costume and theatre studies students help prepare and coordinate productions with a faculty of experts. You may also combine your interest in theatre with another major or honours subject, or simply round out your programme with interesting electives.

Whatever your interest in theatre, you'll find the best mix for you at King's and Dalhousie.
