Science at King's

A curiosity in both arts and science can be satisfied at King's.

Students of the College can explore both arts and science, benefiting from the two perspectives. Through the first-year Foundation Year Programme science option and the upper-year History of Science and Technology Programme, students with an interest in science can gain new insights in the world we live in and the place of science in it.

King's acclaimed Foundation Year Programme is a dynamic and challenging first year of university study where traditional barriers between subjects are replaced by a seamless survey of Western civilization from its ancient-world beginnings to contemporary times. At the heart of FYP are the great books and the discussions they generate. In FYP, you are immersed in a supportive learning environment, enhanced by team teaching, tutorials and individual attention.

The traditional Foundation Year Programme represents four out of the five credits needed for a complete first year. The science option has a reduced course load and schedule, and is the equivalent of three credits, designed to allow science students to choose two science credits in their first year.

History of Science and Technology

The interdisciplinary adventure you will begin in your first year continues with our History of Science and Technology Programme. Intended for both arts and science students, this combined honours programme is rooted in the great books. In HOST, you will engage in thought-provoking discussions as you examine the place of science in the broader context of society, past and present. Is science a more true way of knowing than other kinds of knowledge? Do science and technology play too big a role in our modern societies? Did they play this role in the past, and will they in the future?

A combined honours programme means you pair HOST with a second honours subject. King's and its neighbour, Dalhousie University, share a joint Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and Faculty of Science, a partnership that translates into many options available to the College's students.

More possibilities

After completing FYP Science, students can also pursue a combined degree in science and arts using the options available at Dalhousie, such as chemistry and philosophy, physics and theatre, or biology and Spanish, to name a few. Or, students can focus their studies on the sciences, and round out their learning with arts electives.
