DESCRIPTION

Of special interest are accounts of child survivors of the Holocaust and the struggle of survivors’ children to reckon with the burden of their parents’ past. We will evaluate the ideal of individual moral responsibility postulated by these texts and consider the recent commercialization of the Holocaust in literature and film. Finally, we will look at the current phenomenon of Holocaust denial, with emphasis on anti-Semitism and white supremacy movements in Canada. The class includes excerpts from films, documentaries, and other video-taped material, and illustrated lectures on Holocaust art.
