Pre-Law at King's

The King's approach to undergraduate education gives pre-law students decisive advantages.

The emphasis on primary document analysis and argument beginning immediately in first year at King's provides a solid preparation for tackling legal argumentation down the road. Small, discussion-based courses provide students with ample opportunity to hone their ability to develop and defend a logical argument both orally and in writing.

Law schools generally aren't looking for a particular degree subject, such as history or chemistry, from their students. Instead, these institutions are simply looking for evidence that an ambitious degree has been successfully completed with good marks. Pre-law students should choose an academic programme that will consistently maintain their interest and engagement, as well as provide an intensive training in writing and argumentation. Honours programmes are a mark of ambition and ability, and so will certainly help students stand out.

Think about what kind of law you might want to study. Budding criminal lawyers might pick a degree in history, sociology or contemporary studies. Business lawyers-in-training would do well to have knowledge in economics, mathematics or business. Would-be constitutional-law experts might want to focus on political science, classics or early modern studies—all just to name a few options. A science degree can also be enormously helpful for lawyers in both the criminal and civil courts, as it gives them the edge in analyzing scientific evidence.

While a wide variety of majors and degrees will prepare you for Law, you can also explore your interests while pursuing a BA by taking the Minor in Law and Society. The proximity of Dalhousie's Law School means that you can also access free public lectures by individuals such as Supreme Court justices, top international criminal court lawyers and leading international academics.
