Many enter the profession at the high school, junior high school and elementary levels, and some go on to teach at the university level. Overall, they seek to share with others their passion for learning and for their chosen subject areas.
If you think you might like to pursue a Bachelor of Education degree, it is important to plan your undergraduate degree carefully.
Admission requirements to BEd programs and provincial certification are different for each institution and province. Generally, one "teachable" subject is required to teach at the elementary level, and two teachables are required for secondary (high school) instruction. The primary teachable is normally composed of a concentration of at least five credits in an approved subject. The secondary teachable is normally a smaller number of credits, in an additional approved subject.
Students at King’s can pursue these goals in a number of ways: a 15-credit degree, a 20-credit major or double major, or a 20-credit honours or combined honours degree can provide students with the background they need to apply for a degree in education.
Because provincial and university requirements can vary, it is important, in particular for journalism students, to check the Department of Education’s website for the province in which you hope to teach, as well as the admission requirements of any university to which you might like to apply.
