Which Classes to Take

There are certain course requirements for new students; these have been clarified on the New Student Advising page.

IB and AP students may be eligible for transfer credits.  Please click here for information about which classes will transfer.

How to Register

Registration is the process of going online and signing up for your classes. FYP, BJH and BJ students please note: although a space in your programme is reserved for you, you still have to register for your classes.

You can register on Saturday, June 2, 2012 at 12:00 p.m.

The Academic Timetable is available for viewing online now at www.dal.ca/online. Just click on Academic Timetable in the sidebar on the left-hand side of the page.

To Register:

  1. Pay your $200 admission deposit.
  2. If you haven't already set up your email, you need to do that now.
  3. Go to www.ukings.ca. Click on Dal Online (in the upper right-hand corner). If you are a new student, select Create PIN. You will need your Student ID Number, Date of Birth and Social Insurance Number. If we do not have a Social Insurance Number on file for you, you should enter 999 999 998 (without spaces) in this section. You will be prompted to set an initial PIN (6 – 8 characters long). Click on Change Password. You will need your PIN to make class changes, access your marks, update your address and so on. If you experience technical difficulty, you can contact the Dal Help Desk at (902) 494-2376 or helpdesk@dal.ca.
  4. Return to the online registration page, which can be accessed in the future using the Dal Online link on www.ukings.ca. Log in using your Student ID (B00…) and PIN. Select Web for Students, and then select Academic Timetable to view the classes available to you. The subjects are listed in alphabetical order. Choose the appropriate subject to view classes. Ensure that you are looking at classes for the Fall/Winter 2012/2013 year. Make a note of the Class Reference Number (CRN) for each class and tutorial you select, paying attention to which term each class is held in.
  5. In the Main Menu, choose the term that you wish to register for (start with Fall). Return to the Main Menu and select Add/Drop Classes. Enter the CRNs you have selected. Click on Submit.

You're now registered! You can view your schedule by Date and Time, or with Detailed View.

Important things to note:

  • Foundation Year Programme (FYP) is listed as King's Foundation Year Programme
  • Full-year classes are split into two terms: X for Fall Term and Y for Winter Term. If you choose a full-year class, you must register for both terms or you will get an error message.
  • Classes that do not have X or Y after their number are half-year classes.
  • If a class you want has a tutorial or lab, you must register for the lecture and tutorial/lab together or you will get an error message. Lectures are shown in beige on the timetable. Tutorials and labs are blue. If you receive a "T0 error," you must add a tutorial. A "L0 error" means that you have to add a lecture.
  • The Dal Online system does not check for timetable conflicts. It is your responsibility to make sure that your classes aren't scheduled at overlapping times.
  • Do not try to register for the 2012/2013 Regular term.  This term is not for undergraduate students.
  • If you receive an error saying 'CRN does not exist' you are trying to put a Winter class in the Fall term, or vice versa.

To assist you with registration, we've decoded the Academic Timetable, explaining the various symbols, acronyms, codes and numbers that populate it. The King’s/Dal Relationship

One of the most frequently asked questions around the Registrar's Office is: "How does this King's/Dal thing work?" The answer is, it works very well, but we realize it can be somewhat confusing to new students.

Simply put, King's and Dalhousie share the faculties of Arts and Science. As a result, our students have access to programmes offered at both universities. This means if you are enrolled in Foundation Year and want to continue with an Arts or Science degree, you don't have to "transfer" to Dal after your first year. BJH students also have the option of doing a combined honours with a second subject from Dal.

Dalhousie is a large and comprehensive university, offering a wide range of programmes and degree options. King's is small and intimate. Together we are able to offer students a close-knit learning environment without having to limit their academic choices.

Below are a few of the student and administrative services that are shared by both institutions:

  • Student Information System: King's and Dalhousie share a student information system. When you log on to register for your classes, update your personal information or view your account, the site will be identified as Dalhousie—but you're in the right place!
  • Registrar's Services: Since we share an information system, King's students sometimes receive correspondence from Dalhousie. If you have questions or problems, you can visit either the King's or the Dalhousie Registrar's Office.
  • Student Accounts: Most King's students pay bills or obtain account information at the King's Student Accounts Office, but they are also free to use the Dal Student Accounts Office. Emails from Dal Student Accounts apply to King's students, too. Please note: Student Loans must be signed at King's.

King's students also have access to Dalhousie Student Services such as Counselling and Career Services, Health Services, etc.

Please note, King's has some programmes and services available only to King's students. For example, you must be a King's student to take the Foundation Year Programme or the Journalism degree programmes. Scholarships, bursaries, student employment opportunities and the varsity athletic programmes are all administered separately through King's.

King's intramural athletic programmes, residences, and King's student clubs and societies tend to be for King's students only (as Dalhousie's are for Dal students only), but there is some crossover in these areas and some student societies are by nature a joint enterprise between Dalhousie and King's.
