Journalism at King's

King’s provides a unique opportunity to combine superb, hands-on journalistic training with the context and insight offered by studying liberal arts and the humanities.

JournalismOur distinctive approach starts with the combination of journalism and the Foundation Year Programme in first year, and builds every year after.

Studying journalism at King’s provides students with an exceptional opportunity to combine an honours degree in journalism with an honours degree in a second arts or science subject. About half of all journalism students at King’s take advantage of this opportunity, which provides students with an additional area of expertise to round out their journalism degree.

For instance, a combined honours degree in journalism and political science makes for a well-informed political reporter, a combined honours degree with a science discipline hones skills as a science journalist, or a music or theatre combined honours degree provides depth to the critiques of an arts reporter. Finally, King’s students can combine journalism with one of the upper-year King’s programmes (the History of Science and Technology Programme, the Early Modern Studies Programme and the Contemporary Studies Programme), providing a journalist with close-reading and analytical skills that are unequaled.

Some journalism students prefer to sample a wide range of classes from the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, or Faculty of Science, including electives in our three upper-year programmes. These students enjoy the broadest range that an undergraduate degree can provide, with the ability to choose courses from 45 academic programmes available in the Dalhousie-King's joint faculties of Arts and Social Science and Science.
