Four-Year Bachelor of Journalism (Honours)

Journalists are investigators and storytellers who gather and disseminate information in a compelling way.

Four-Year ProgramToday's journalists require an analytical mind and thoughtful purpose, viewing journalism as both a skill and an art. The King's BJH program is built on this philosophy, educating and equipping its graduates to become truly professional journalists who have both a superior academic education and a superb practical skill set, providing them with broader social, political and philosophical content in their reporting.

By responding to the scholarly pursuit of journalism as an art, the program provides critical thinking and problem solving skills along with the breadth of knowledge gained through undergraduate education, in this case strengthened by our unique partnership with Dalhousie University. Throughout the program, students will complete over half of the required credits in the Faculty of Arts and Science, allowing for an exploration in other areas of interest while still specializing in journalism.

The practical components of journalism as a skill are addressed through creative and factual writing, editing, interviewing techniques and all facets of print, online and broadcast production, which allow our graduates to become immediately productive, working journalists. Students work collaboratively in deadline-driven environments, producing newspaper, online publication, and radio and television programming. (Take a look at some of our student work here.) Adding to this real world exposure to their profession, the BJH internship program gives students valuable on-the-job experience and the opportunity to build professional contacts.

The combined honours option

A distinct advantage of the King's program is the opportunity to pursue a Combined Honours degree. Students can choose their second subject from either the faculty of Arts and Social Sciences or Science, as well as one of the College's three interdisciplinary programmes: Contemporary Studies, Early Modern Studies and History of Science and Technology. The blend of journalism studies and an enhanced grounding in another subject fuels the prospect of specializing in a particular field of journalism, such as political or financial commentary and scientific reporting.
