Arts & Social Sciences at King's

For students coming to King’s to study Arts and Social Sciences, a world of opportunity awaits.

Students can begin their studies in the Foundation Year Programme, which provides a unique opportunity to bridge the many disciplines that have contributed to Western thought—students gain exposure to literature, history, philosophy, political science, religious history, economic theory, the history of science and the consideration of music, theatre and art.

For students who want a more conventional approach to first-year studies, King’s students have access to the full range of Arts and Social Sciences and Science courses offered through Dalhousie University.

After first year, about half of the students at King’s will choose to move into a major or honours degree in one or two disciplines from the 45 academic program options available from the Dalhousie-King’s joint faculties of Arts and Social Sciences and Science. There are also a number of subjects available in which to minor.

These students, while exploring the opportunities of their chosen academic departments at Dal, continue to enjoy the benefits and closeness of the King’s experience. King’s students have access to student services, awards, financial aid and electives in the King’s academic programmes. Their new friendships and opportunities at Dal flourish alongside their continued involvement in life at King’s—through societies, friendships and our close-knit community.

The other half of our Arts and Social Science students at King’s will choose to explore one of the unique interdisciplinary programme options at the College. These programmes are the History of Science and Technology Programme, the Early Modern Studies Programme and the Contemporary Studies Programme. Study in these areas is combined with a discipline-based program through Dalhousie, providing students with a variety of perspectives for pursuing their academic interests.
